Week of December 16-19

Training for Excellence 8 - Hidalgo
This week students worked with a friend to complete several training exercises. We also did some team building activities and tried out the new game "9 Square in the air"!

ART 9
Students were to complete their still life painting this week as a new project will be introduced in the new year.

DANCE 9
Students had a great time viewing Forest Lawn's ballet production of Snow White and appreciated the effort that was put into the show by the high school's dance students.  Grade 9 dance students have been busy this week completing a critique of the performance and leading a hip hop warm-up for their classmates.  In the new year, students will be choreographing a hip hop dance.

DRAMA 5
Students have been engaged in script work.  They have been assigned roles for the play: A Tale of Snow White and have been busy staging it.  The hope is to organize a showing of the production before the end of the semester.

In Grade 5, many are finished their pop can and have started to make a little paper-mache snowman.

In Grade 7, most have started their good copy of their one point perspective project. Students were allowed to choose between a road or a room and also had their choice of medium.

Outdoor Ed 9- Week of Dec 16th

Students finished presenting their Environmental issues presentation. They did very well for most of them. Please refer to Powerschool for marks.  We went out to try snowshoeing and will do so again next week to prepare for the field trip on January 28th. More details to come. After the Holidays, we will do some orienteering exercises and training, along with building quinzees.   Enjoy your Holidays!

Thalheimer - Foods 7 & Leadership 9

Foods 7
This week we planned and cooked Belgian Waffles in our Waffle Irons. Class went great, this is a longer recipe as the waffles take a little longer to cook. All groups were finished before the end of class which was great and they also whipped up their own Whipped Cream. The next two weeks we will be looking at some Christmas Recipes to finish off before the break!

Leadership 9
We continued our planning of Christmas Events for the final week of school before the Christmas Holidays. We are planning an Ugly Christmas Sweater Day as well as having a Door Decorating Contest throughout the school too. We also organized our Food Bank Boxes as multiple boxes are full so some students were tasked with organizing these. Moving into the final two weeks it will be focused on Christmas around the school and making sure our decorations and communications to classes about the various events is happening.

Week of December 2-6

Hidalgo - Training for Excellence
Students worked with a partner this week and created a work out plan for each other. They chose exercises that we have been practicing in class and helped coach their partner. The goal was to help motivate and engage their classmate to do the best workout they could. This was one of our best classes yet: so many positive interactions!!

Computers -

7 - Photoshop has begun.  We are working on a collage.  Our primary focus is on layering and the eraser/quick selection tool and magic wand.

8 - After a vote, we have changed the topic to do some coding.  We are did buttons as an intro, and are working towards collisions.  Support is available here:

Art 5 and 7 November 29th

In Grade 5, students are working hard at their pop can; adding details, making a background and pressing hard on their coloured pencils to get bright colours. They are doing a really good job and I am very impressed with their work.

In Grade 7, students have been practicing one point perspective working with drawn shapes, worksheets and finally making a rough draft. Some have started a good copy for their project. Students have the choice to do a room or a road. So far so good!

Week of Nov 25-29

Outdoor Ed Beaudoin
Students went on a climbing field trip. They had fun. Thanks to all that participated. Next field trip will be on January 28. We will be going snowshoeing.

Computers 5-6
We are finishing our Sound Unit Audacity.  Grades will be posted soon.  For our next unit, we will be looking towards graphics with Paint.Net.  Not all students have been assessed, but I am looking to finish up by Monday.

Computers 7-8  In class, we are wrapping up our Animation unit.  Grades for both the Tweens and the button creation will be posted as soon they are finished being graded.  Next up is Photoshop and Video.

Computers 9- The synchronizing assignment is past due.  Slow progress and a late start have taken their toll.  Next week, we will start After Effects, with the hope of getting kids working right away.  Grades will be posted asap.

Design 9 - We are printing as much as we can to have the kids start finishing their work.  Group work has begun.  Slicing is slow as choice has become problematic to reach team consensus on what to do.  Few have begun puttying samples and gluing pieces together.    This will be the largest project to date.

Week of November 18-20

Art 9
Students will be researching watercolour painting techniques and snow sculpture this weekend in order to help them with their still life project and snow sculpture project.

Drama 5&7
Students have started the improv unit.  We are playing theatre games like "bus riders", "one word at a time", "freezes", "objects", and "whatcha doing?" to increase skills in improvisation.  Next unit will involve script work.

Dance 9
Students have been working on contemporary and ballet dance techniques.  They are also being choreographed in a dance to understand different time variations of dancers (canon, counterpoint, unison, & dialogue) that can be used in dance composition.  Next unit will be hip hop and student choreography.

Art 5 and 7


In both Grade 5 and 7, we have pretty much completed the one on one conferences. Students were able to reflect and analyze their work, identify their strengths and areas in which they can improve as well as getting feedback. .

In Grade 5, we have just started a still life with a pop can. Students are looking at the basic shape and learning to draw from a 3-D model, following steps. It is one of the most popular projects for students and it's always exciting to see how much they progress!

In Grade 7, most have completed their building project. I have pushed them hard, they have pushed themselves hard... It seems many students have exceeded their own expectations of what they can do, I can't ask for more than that, I am really proud of their work! Moving forward, we are starting a one point perspective project where they will have a choice in terms design, colouring, creativity while keeping the technical aspects at the forefront.

Week of November 4th- 8th

Shewfelt Grade 7 Foods- This week, students planned and cooked a pancake breakfast. We did a class demonstration earlier this week and made some minor changes to the recipe based on the result. Students worked together in groups to create their product. This was a successful lab, and all kitchen groups made tasty fluffy pancakes! Students learned about keeping the batter lumpy without any flour streaks, as well as looking for the large air bubbles to pop before flipping their pancakes. Foods safety was also stressed during this lab. 

Hidalgo Training for excellence 8 - Students completed a new fitness plan, as well as, 2-day meal plan that can help them improve in the sport of their choice. These plans will be tested next week.

Week of Oct 28-31

Training for Excellence 8 - Hidalgo
This week, students focused on sport specific training. We did research on a specific sport of their choosing. They learned which exercises and food choices would most benefit them when training for their sport. They then used that information to start of training plan and meal plan. We will continue working on these goals next week.

Grade 5 and 7 art




In grade 5 students are working really hard on drawing a face. They can look realistic, funny or cartoonish; the main goal is to learn where to put the facial features…No eyes in the forehead anymore! They are being encouraged to push their colouring skills and sometimes that takes more effort but it’s well worth the time. We have also started student/teacher one on one conference to discuss analyze their work, share feedback and self-assess.



In grade 7 students are working really hard on their building/structure drawing project. Shading takes a lot of time and technique. I am really impressed with their work but most importantly, I think many of them are impressed with their own work! Friday 25th-Avalanche Canada Training sessions will take place here at school. 2 hours. Theory and practical, followed by a quiz next week in class. Also, on November 26th in the PM, Calgary climbing center. Forms to follow. Cost is 23$.  We are also doing shelters and tent setting, along with mapping our school yard.

Comm Tech/Design Studies
We are currently in transition to another project.  The grades 5-6 are finishing up their audacity changes assignment, grades 7-8 should be completing their respective frame by frame and movie clip embedding assignment, and the 9s are wrapping up keyframing.

7 Foods- Shewfelt 
This week we made pumpkin pie in a mug! The students reported that the recipe turned out great! Next week we will be switching roles within the kitchen, and cooking the same recipe again. This time, students will change, add or alter one or more components of the recipe in order to make improvements.

This week, students were hard at work planning and organizing the Halloween walking tour as well as the Halloween dance. Students are learning how to work with a budget and source out materials in order to put on a large school event. We are looking forward to seeing our hard work enjoyed by the students in the school next week.

Week of Oct 14-18

Shewfelt- Grade 7 Foods: This week students worked through planning and cooking their second recipe- Apple Crisp! Students learned the technique of peeling an apple using a proper paring knife. Students learned how to peel each quarter with a paring knife, using their thumb and peeling hand to guide the knife. Students will appraise their group's recipe and brainstorm ways their group could increase their productivity.

** Remember to bring knitting needles and yarn for those students who are interested in learning!

Shewfelt & Thorpe Fedchun- Grade 9 Leadership: Grade 9 leadership students are hard at work planning and organizing the Halloween dance, alternative activities for Halloween day, Haunted Halloween walk, and door decorating competition.

Comm Tech 5-9

In grade 5-6, we are currently working on Audacity, a sound based program.  We are looking at editing through basic commands (cut, copy paste and adding effects)  This is an exercise in control.

Week of Oct 7-10th

Drama 9 FEDCHUN- This week students worked within small groups to create skits and monologues around a given theme. ' In Every Skit'

Leadership 8 & 9 -SHEWFELT AND FEDCHUN- students are now working on Halloween Activities and getting things prepared for the school dance, haunted house, door decorating and so much more. Students who are participating in the haunted house are asked to stay after school from 2:30-4:30 on Oct 28, 29 and 30 for set up.  Grade 9 Leadership students who are not participating have started an assignment: Planning a FUNdraiser. 

Foods 7 Shewfelt- This week we started our preparation for our second recipe "Apple Crisp" We will begin cooking Wednesday next week! We will be working on "appraising" each groups recipe upon completion.

We continue to work on our landscape in ink drawings.

Fashion 8 (McMorran)
This week we did practice pages to get used to the sewing machines. We will continue next week and then, if time permits, try our hands at a simple project: making a napkin.

In outdoor Ed 8 this week we prepared for our next field trip, canoeing and kayaking Heritage Lake.  We reviewed the different parts of a canoe or a kayak and how to handle a paddle.  Our field trip wil be on Wednesday.  have a good week end.  Mr Favry

Art Grade 5 and 7 Week of Sept. 30th


In Grade 5 Art, students finished their tile project and started their robot project. Students are using fundamental drawing techniques to copy their model using basic shapes.

In Grade 7 Art, students finished their basic shapes project and have almost completed their “lose the fish” project. Students were provided with a small image (drawing) of a fish on a page and were to put the fish in a context of their choice. They will be assessed on their creativity, drawing skills and colouring skills.

This week students completed a Tabata workout with Mr. Thalheimer. This is a HIIT (High-Intensity, Interval Training) workout. Next week students will continue to learning bodyweight exercises and workout plans that they can do at home without equipment.

We started working on a personalized workout plan based on our goal setting assignment.  Most have a solid plan, but we need to work on executing them without reminder :)

Grade 7 Foods-  Shewfelt 

This week we completed our first foods lab! The lab was a tremendous success, and each kitchen group created yummy carrot apple sauce muffins. We learned about substitutions for refined sugar in baking recipes this week. Students also had an opportunity to appraise their recipes the following class, and make alterations to some ingredients in order to improve the quality of their product. Each table group made a suggestion as to how they were alter/improve their recipe, and as a class we cooked one more batch of muffins- taste test will occur on Monday!

** Not mandatory- if students would like to bring their own set of knitting needles and a ball of yearn, I would love to incorporate some fashion into this class. When our recipes are cooking and our kitchens are cleaned up, I will be demonstrating some basic knitting techniques with students who are interested, and we will make a headband/ear warmer.

Leadership- Shewfelt

Leadership students were busy tallying up the final results for our Terry Fox run, as well as counting money for the Terry Fox Cancer Foundation. Students are learning how to take initiative in class, and come up with projects they are passionate about in order to create positive change in the school. Next large project will be planning and organizing the school Halloween dance at the end of the month.

Week of Sept 23-27

OED update 2

Hi,
This week we went on a great hike to Mount Yamnuska. We saw some bears!!! Next week we will prep for our next field trip which will be Canoeing and Kayaking on October 9th.  Please make sure you sign the forms and pay online 26$ under optional fees section.  We will need a volunteer for that morning. Grade 9 Leadership

Ms. Shewfelt's grade 9 leadership students did a fantastic job planning and organizing the Terry Fox assembly and run this week. Students worked hard creating bilingual scripts, while researching Terry Fox's legacy. The grade 9's demonstrated excellent leadership skills throughout the assembly and school run- way to go Tigers!

Drama 9- Students worked together to develop trust by being led through the school blindfolded. We had some great conversations around their experience. We also, completed some activities using their other senses.

Leadership 8 & 9 Fedchun- We have been busy! We fund-raised for Hurricane Dorian Relief and raised $291.50.  Students volunteered their time at the Meet the Teacher Night and Healthy Hunger. We are completing tasks around the school, and getting ready to take on the Halloween Festivities. We are planning a dance, haunted house and 'Spooktivies' for Oct 31st.

Training for Excellence in Sport 8 - Thalheimer

This week the students were supposed to complete a minimum of 1 full workout in order for them to do the workout on Wednesday. Friday we did an in class workout that I created and we did it together as a class. Next week we will look at finalizing their workouts and refining them as needed.

This week we discussed first aid.  Half of us went to hike Mount Yamnuska.  Next week we will start preparing for our upcoming canoe trip that will take place on October 9.  Have a great snowy weekend.  Mr Favry

We have been having the best time in drama so far.  We have been participating in orientation games to develop trust with each other and gain more confidence to express ourselves.  Soon we will be creating scenes with tableaux and explore the craft of miming.

This month we have been developing our skills and style in swing dance.  We are currently choreographing a partner composition that is true to form.  Looking forward to a whole semester of working with these very talented and passionate grade 9s.

Environment and Outdoor Ed  9 - Beaudoin

Important (time sensitive)

Field trip: Students are expected to come on the hiking field trip at Mount Yamnuska next Wednesday September 25th. It is part of this option class. We ill be back at 16h00. Forms and money are due ASAP and before Tuesday at lunch.

We have been preparing for that field trip in class by discussing how we dress properly and we went over a few first aid scenarios. Next Thursday, we will start preparing for our next field trip on October 9th at the Calgary Canoe / kayak club. WE will need volunteer for that one too.

We continued this week to develop our non-verbal drama skills, with a classic game of charades. We will continue developing these skills through miming, mirroring and tableau.

We have been busy getting yearbook up and going,  Healthy Hunger started this week and we had a bake sale for Hurricane Dorian Fundraising, where we raised $291.50. Students are busy getting ready for the Terry Fox Run next week. Students can purchase a Leadership hoodie this week for $30.00. Please see Ms Fedchun for the order form.

In Grade 7 Art, students are almost done with their basic shapes project (copying a 2D image) and for the most part, very methodical about following each step, great job! We will be starting a new project this coming week using desserts as models.

In Grade 5 Art, we are continuing to work on our tile project. Students who are done the initial step of copying their name are now exploring colour choice/combination, deciding to add patterns to their letters or not. Once we are done, we be will looking at drawing lessons using basic shapes and moving to our next project (robot in chalk pastels).

Band

Festive Winter Concert: Wednesday December 18th 7:30PM, Lord BeaverBrook HS Theatre. Grades 5, 6, 7, 8 & Bands will be performing a variety of repertoire. An email will be sent out this week regarding the concert, and the DTS band uniform. Here is the information for the uniform:


The band uniform for all grades consists of black bottoms (dress pants preferred, please no leggings, with black socks. Students may choose to wear a skirt instead of pants, but skirts should be of modest length and students are required to wear opaque black tights with skirts), black shoes, and a red David Thompson Band polo shirt. If a student has outgrown their shirt, or if their shirt is too small, they can exchange their current shirt at no extra cost.

For those that do not already have one, the red band shirts can be purchased at a cost of $25 payable to the David Thompson Band Society’ in the form of cash or cheque. Please send this payment or make alternate arrangements with Mr. McClary by Wednesday, December 11th so the shirts can be distributed prior to the concert. If you would like to discuss alternate arrangements please feel free to contact me at camcclary@cbe.ab.ca

In Grade  5 & 7 Art, students did a “Show Me” mini-assignment where they were free to complete a drawing of their choice to show what they can do and what they like to do (skills and creativity). They also completed a questionnaire about their like/dislike/ strengths and challenges in art. Each student has also made a folder to keep their work organized.

 
GRADE 5:
We are now staring a “tile” project where student will be able to explore reflection image, creativity, style and patterns.

Students need to be ready for any weather conditions and come to school prepared on the days of the class. We will try to go outside as much as we can.  Students will have the opportunity (optional) to buy a hoodie or a t-shirt for this class. A form will go home soon. Welcome to CTF Construction Studies!

(CTF) is an optional program of studies for Grades 5 through Grade 9 that allows students to discover and explore their interests and passions and to build skills so they may make reasonable career choices in the future. Construction studies is a project based course with a primary focus on woodworking. Project work varies by grade, and each level presents new challenges and learning opportunities.
Success will be a product of the growth that you demonstrate over a semester. Students will be graded with a mark 1 – 4, four being excellent, and one indicating not meeting. Quality over quantity is the goal. A commitment to your safety and the safety of others is a major priority! It’s a hands-on learning environment so arrive ready to create!
Project materials are supplied at no cost to the student.

Students in Construction Studies are currently completing an orientation and safety review. Project work to begin this week!




New tools and building techniques are being introduced at all grade levels. The first major project is underway with a focus on continued skill development.
Grade 5 - trinket box 1 - introduction to the handsaw. This can be a big challenge for some students. It takes lots of repetition and practice!
Grade 6 - trinket box 2 -  refining hand-sawing technique using larger stock
Grade 7 - wooden tetris puzzle - introduction to the band saw
Grade 8 - rabbeted spruce box - introduction to thickness planer and router table
Grade 9 - treasure chest - much of the content introduced in grades seven and eight are being consolidated in the construction of this project. Orthographic drawing and a cutting list precede the build.


The first major project is nearing completion for most students and some have started the second assignment:

Grade 5 - pencil holder project - students will continue to refine handsawing technique. The challenge increases as larger dimension lumber is introduced to create this project.
Grade 6 - Small pencil box
Grade 7 - Key shelf
Grade 8 - Gumball Machine
Grade 9 - Most are nearing completion of the Treasure Chest. Beach Chair is the next building challenge. Students in grade nine are given the opportunity to turn a poplar bowl on the lathe. We have one lathe in the lab and my hope is to involve as many students as possible in this activity.


Grade 5 - pencil holder nearing completion for most students. Next up for the grade fives is a cat themed bird house.
Grade 6 - pencil box has been completed by many students. Door decoration (bird house theme) is underway.
Grade 7 - Tetris puzzle and key shelf should be completed within the next week. A few still remain on these projects. Major group project with tie in to science begins. Scale drawing for truss bridge underway.
Grade 8 - construction on the gumball machine continues for the majority.
Grade 9 - Treasure chest completed by some students. Monster truck or beach chair next up.

Leadership

Welcome to Leadership and we hope you are ready to have a fun year in which you will develop your personal, group and organizational leadership skills. 
This year, we will be working on numerous aspects of leadership and how it can be useful in developing a positive school culture.  You will be assigned to a very important role within your school, which will provide you with the necessary tools in becoming strong leaders.  These tools will help to develop a positive sense of school community and will aid you in becoming responsible, upstanding citizens.
There will be many school wide projects that you will be involved in as well as classroom activities to help you become an independent leader.  The leadership program will be running some school wide events, and each member will play his/her part in making each event a success.
Participation is mandatory for this course.  Self-awareness of ones’ actions is a must.  As mentioned above, you have a special role in this school, and setting a good example is essential in developing your leadership qualities.  Additionally, attitude and effort will count as major components for this course.

Expectations:
All students will:
·         Put forth their best effort, every day
·         Come prepared to class by bringing appropriate materials to class each day
·         Follow the Student Code of Conduct and all other classroom rules
·         Complete all tasks and assignments given throughout the course
·         Volunteer  their time outside of this course for a minimum of 5 hours
NOTE: As a leadership student, you are not only required to follow the school rules, but you are required to be an example to other students, teachers and community members.
Projects/Activities:
Throughout the year, we will be doing many projects and activities focused on leadership, goal-setting and service. These projects and activities will be based on helping you become a better leader and helping you set achievable goals. You will be given enough time in class to complete your assignments.

Evaluation:
You will be evaluated on the following criteria throughout the course:
·         Develops and refines leadership skills
·         Applies leadership practices in authentic contexts
·         Explores and refines strategies for engaging others in the school community
Students will be evaluated on the above criteria using the following scale:

General Aims and Objectives 

  • Develop an interest in Food Studies in order to motivate students to continue practicing and learning.
  • Develop and awareness of the nutritional importance of food and its role in health and wellness.
  • Develop basic knowledge, skills and attitudes through the preparation of a variety of foods in order create healthy eating habits to last a lifetime.
  • Practice safe, organized and sanitary food handling habits and to realize the consequences of failing to do so.
  • Develop skills in selection, preparation and costing of food.
Program Design
The Food 7 course consists of the following areas:
  • Basic Classroom and Food Preparation Routines including: safety, time management, sanitation, measurement, equipment and costing
  • Basic Nutrition, Canada Food Guide 
  • After School Snacks 
  • Breakfasts
  • Lunch Meals
  • Supper Meals
Assessment and Evaluation
Assessment is ongoing and students will be assessed through a variety of methods that may include: assignments, quizzes, projects and observation. You will not be advised, in advance or otherwise, of the specific time of observation. Please note as this is an applied skills class you are required to do all your work during class time. You will not be allowed to take your projects home to work on them. The exception is the Home Meal Assignment.
CTF Indicators are as follows:
  • 4-Expert: Can apply the learning to complex tasks independently and collaboratively
  • 3- Practitioner: Can apply the learning to increasingly difficult tasks with prompts
  • 2-Apprentice: Can apply the learning to basic tasks with guidance
  • 1-Novice-Can apply the learning to basic tasks but only with much guidance

The three stems being assessed are as follows:
  • Explore interests, passions and skills, while making personal connections to career possibilities
  • Design/Create/Appraise/Communicate in response to challenges
  • Working independently and with others while exploring careers and technology
Course Expectations:
YOU ARE ALWAYS EXPECTED TO FOLLOW ALL SAFETY PROCEDURES. FAILURE TO DO SO WILL RESULT IN APPROPRIATE CONSEQUENCES
You need to bring your pencil and eraser to EVERY CLASS.
No food or drinks are allowed in the room, except a sealable water bottle and food made in class
You are required to follow assigned due dates
It is your responsibility to check with the teacher if you were absent, also look at another’s daily planner
You are expected to try your best at all times and help create a positive learning environment
Conduct:
There is ZERO tolerance for disrespectful behavior. In these classes you are a member of a team, and as such are expected to participate and aid your fellow classmates where necessary. Misuse of the equipment will result in a loss of privileges which will impact your ability to complete your projects.
