General Aims and Objectives 

  • Develop an interest in Food Studies in order to motivate students to continue practicing and learning.
  • Develop and awareness of the nutritional importance of food and its role in health and wellness.
  • Develop basic knowledge, skills and attitudes through the preparation of a variety of foods in order create healthy eating habits to last a lifetime.
  • Practice safe, organized and sanitary food handling habits and to realize the consequences of failing to do so.
  • Develop skills in selection, preparation and costing of food.
Program Design
The Food 7 course consists of the following areas:
  • Basic Classroom and Food Preparation Routines including: safety, time management, sanitation, measurement, equipment and costing
  • Basic Nutrition, Canada Food Guide 
  • After School Snacks 
  • Breakfasts
  • Lunch Meals
  • Supper Meals
Assessment and Evaluation
Assessment is ongoing and students will be assessed through a variety of methods that may include: assignments, quizzes, projects and observation. You will not be advised, in advance or otherwise, of the specific time of observation. Please note as this is an applied skills class you are required to do all your work during class time. You will not be allowed to take your projects home to work on them. The exception is the Home Meal Assignment.
CTF Indicators are as follows:
  • 4-Expert: Can apply the learning to complex tasks independently and collaboratively
  • 3- Practitioner: Can apply the learning to increasingly difficult tasks with prompts
  • 2-Apprentice: Can apply the learning to basic tasks with guidance
  • 1-Novice-Can apply the learning to basic tasks but only with much guidance

The three stems being assessed are as follows:
  • Explore interests, passions and skills, while making personal connections to career possibilities
  • Design/Create/Appraise/Communicate in response to challenges
  • Working independently and with others while exploring careers and technology
Course Expectations:
YOU ARE ALWAYS EXPECTED TO FOLLOW ALL SAFETY PROCEDURES. FAILURE TO DO SO WILL RESULT IN APPROPRIATE CONSEQUENCES
You need to bring your pencil and eraser to EVERY CLASS.
No food or drinks are allowed in the room, except a sealable water bottle and food made in class
You are required to follow assigned due dates
It is your responsibility to check with the teacher if you were absent, also look at another’s daily planner
You are expected to try your best at all times and help create a positive learning environment
Conduct:
There is ZERO tolerance for disrespectful behavior. In these classes you are a member of a team, and as such are expected to participate and aid your fellow classmates where necessary. Misuse of the equipment will result in a loss of privileges which will impact your ability to complete your projects.
